Happy MLK Day!

Happy Martin Luther King Day to all our friends in the US and to all those who have been inspired by his legacy, we certainly have! MLK was a dreamer, he dreamt of abolishing poverty. He dreamt of a day when those suffering from poverty, inequalities and racism could one day find voice and strength together to stand up and be heard, to be equal. This year marks 50 years since MLK passed away. His legacy and his words referencing challenges faced by society 50 years ago, are still all too relevant in today’s world.

Here in the UCYG we explored the legacy of MLK and were inspired to start a project designed to create a new space in Ireland for young people between the ages of 16-25 to find their voice as leaders and to explore the inequalities of poverty in the context of their own life.  We have designed a creative writing campaign to encourage young people to write a speech inspired by MLK’s legacy to address the inequalities in Ireland today.

MLK once said “The curse of poverty has no justification in our age…The time has come for us to civilise ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolishment of poverty”. Here we are over 50 years later and still faced with the same challenge. Poverty still has no justification in our age or any age.

The UCYG is ready to take on the challenges set out by MLK. The first step we will take is to find voice. We are here to say that the young people of Ireland believe poverty must end. We have dreams here in the UCYG, dreams like MLK. We want to know, are there others out there with dreams? What are your dreams? What do you want to say?

MLK taughtt us that the power of a united voice is endless. As much as words can be used as weapons to break us down, to tell us we aren’t good enough, to tell us we aren’t meant to make it, they can in equal measure be used to inspire us, to empower us, to unite us and to allow us to dream beyond measure.

This website is official live as of today. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements and key dates including; news about our project ambassador, how to take part, workshops, the official launch and much much more!

Happy MLK Day! Give voice to your dreams. We can’t wait to hear them!
